All Upper School students and their advisors gathered on Monday, September 25, for the first advisory activity of the year, designed to focus on the character traits of enthusiasm, outlook, and adaptability.
In the activity — called “Paper Tower” — each boy was randomly given 1-3 pieces of printer paper (15 in all), with one boy in the group not given any, and advised of the following instructions:
Without speaking to each other, you are now to build the tallest free-standing tower possible, using only the paper given to you (no tape, scissors, etc.). Each of you may use only your own paper to build your own segments. Then, when you are done, put your individualpieces into the middle, and, as a team, assemble your tower. You have 10 minutes to complete this exercise.
Objectives included having the boys non-verbally collaborate and problem solve; fostering a group dynamic for the advisory; giving quieter boys a means to take an active role; and providing a context for an advisor to see his or her advisees taking on a task.
Kudos to the winners, Mr. Michael Allwood’s advisory, for assembling a 66-inch tower.
