Brunswick tied Choate 1-1 in the season-opening game for the Bruins at home on Wednesday. The contest was also the first game for Brunswick’s new head coach, Danny Simpson.
The Bruins (0-0-1) fell behind early, as the Wild Boars (1-0-1) scored their only goal of the game at the 9th minute. On the scoring play, Choate collected the ball just outside the 18 and launched a shot on goal. Brunswick’s keeper Harry Barringer attempted a diving save to the right, but the partially deflected ball ended up inside the post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins countered in the 33rd minute, netting the equalizer on a pretty header off a corner kick.
On Brunswick’s scoring play, Nick Boardman placed a picture-perfect ball from the left corner to a leaping Ben Powers in front of the Choate goal. Powers redirected the ball with a header right over the outstretched arm of the Choate goalie to knot the score at 1-1.
In the second half, both squads had some strong opportunities to take the lead, most notably Brunswick’s Dante Polvara’s 25-yard blast that hit the post at the 65th minute mark. However, neither team could muster the go-ahead goal, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Barringer opened the season with an excellent nine-save effort in goal for the Bruins. Aiding the defensive effort were center-backs Powers and Jamie Polak, who nicely contained a potent Choate offensive attack.
The Bruins return to action on the road, traveling to Taft on Saturday, September 16.
