Danny Simpson, a familiar name in the Greenwich soccer community and a distinguished coach who patrolled the sidelines for the girls’ varsity team at Greenwich High School for the past dozen years, has assumed head coaching duties for the Bruins in 2017.
Simpson, the FCIAC Coach of the Year in 2015, takes over the Bruin program that finished 8-8-1 a year ago. During his 12 seasons at GHS, Simpson won four FCIAC titles and qualified for CIAC post-season play every season between 2005-2015.
The new leader has coached both genders on the soccer pitch for over 20 years. According to Simpson, he teaches the game the same to all his players. Regarding his style, the English transplant from South London wants to “play organized, exciting football.”
Veteran assistant coaches Chris Forester and Jonathan Kaptcianos return for coach Simpson this fall to work with a roster boasting several players with experience.
Leadership on the field will come from co-captains Nick Boardman and Dante Polvara. The pair were tabbed as WNEPSAA Class A selections a year ago. Polvara, a junior from Pleasantville, N.Y., scored 15 goals and added six assists to earn a spot on the Class A Select Team, while Boardman garnered honorable mention status with seven goals and five helpers last season.
Simpson’s approach is to give his players the tools adapt to different opponents and styles of play. “I want them to be in control of their destiny,” noted the new Bruins coach. “This journey began day one at tryouts and is on-going.”
Following four early scrimmages, the Bruins open their 2017 campaign at home against Choate on Wednesday, September 13, at 3:30 p.m.
