Sailing Wins Fairfield Cup

Brunswick sailed away with the Fairfield Cup on Saturday, besting seven other programs across the Fairfield Sailing League. The four division fleet-race event, hosted by the Pequot Yacht Club, saw the Bruins power to two first-place division finishes in the 420’s, and a third and fourth place finish in the Laser divisions.

Brunswick has not competed in the Fairfield Cup since winning the event in 2014, as the Bruins had scheduling conflicts with other regattas the past two years.

In the 420 A Division, captain Jack Parkin competed with Bay Hodge and posted a near-perfect day with four first-place and one second-place finish, winning the 420 A Division. The Bruins outpaced both Green Farms and Staples High School, as the two teams finished 12 points behind in second place.

In the 420 B Division, Brunswick eighth-grader Leyton Borcherding skippered with George Coyle as crew, earning another top finish for the Bruins. The tandem earned three first-place finishes, with one second and one third, and held off the second-place boat from Greens Farms by six points.

The regatta has two additional fleets, the Laser Standard and the Laser Radial, adding two more divisions to the total team score.

Brunswick's Peter Pillari, a five-year sailing veteran for Brunswick, finished fourth in the Laser Standard. While not racing a Laser Standard for three years, Pillari picked up four third-place and one fourth-place result to finish five points behind the winning boat from Darien High School. Ahead of the regatta, Pillari had one single day of practice in the Laser Standard.

In the final fleet, the Laser Radial, Will George took on the challenge of competing in a foreign boat. While sailing the Laser in the past, in recent years George’s focus has been in the 420. For the day, George tallied one second-place finish, three thirds, and one fourth, earning the Bruin a third-place result (15 points), just eight points behind the winning boat from Fairfield Prep.

Combining all four divisions for the total team score, Brunswick finished with 45 team points, the lowest in the eight-team field. Darien finished second with 64 points, while third-place Fairfield Prep tallied 77 team points.
