In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, #12 Brunswick rallied from an early deficit to beat #8 Avon Old Farms, 14-5, on Wednesday. The victory is the 12th-straight for Brunswick (12-1, 8-0) following a setback to Landon, currently ranked second in this week’s Inside Lacrosse-Under Armour national poll.
Trailing 2-1 after one quarter, Brunswick took over in the second quarter, scoring four-straight goals and taking a 5-2 lead by the 3:37 mark. Alex Buckanavage tied the game at two at 9:03, and Jimmy Heidt followed with three-straight goals before Avon Old Farms (AOF) stopped the run with a tally at 2:17.
After exchanging goals to close out the half, the Bruins never looked back.
Leading 6-4 to start the third quarter, Brunswick tacked on three more goals and built a commanding 9-4 lead. Jack Montinaro opened the scoring, and Xander Dickson followed by finishing a pass from Sean Morris for a man-up goal at 5:58. Dickson closed out the frame, netting his second goal on a Buckanavage feed with just under two minutes to play.
In the fourth quarter, Dickson was part of the Bruins’ next three tallies, bookending assists around his third goal of the day. The trio of goals bumped the Brunswick advantage to 12-4 with 7:32 remaining in the game. Following an AOF goal, Jack Ocken wrapped up the scoring for Brunswick, as the Bruins won the pivotal road game, 13-5.
Patrick Burkinshaw nabbed a dozen saves for Brunswick, as Ben Shapiro won 12/20 face-offs. Max Metalios and Shapiro each grabbed a team-best three groundballs. Dickson finished with seven points (three goals and four assists), while Heidt netted a team-high five goals.
The Bruins have a pair of home games this week, hosting #22 Salisbury on Friday night and Trinity-Pawling on Saturday afternoon.
