Crew Captures Inaugural Kulaga Cup

Brunswick brought six boats to the waters on Black Rock Harbor near Bridgeport for a Saturday morning event against NEIRA rival Fairfield Prep. The Bruins won five races of six races, including a sweep of First, Second and Third Varsity races to claim the inaugural Kulaga Cup.
 
Rowing the 1,400-meter course with an outgoing tide, the Bruins attacked the fast conditions, highlighted by a come-from-behind victory in the Third Varsity race, as Brunswick edge Fairfield Prep by .64 seconds at the finish.
 
In the First Varsity race, the Bruins worked the conditions to their favor, rowing at a high intensity and fast rhythm. Coach Joe Falco's crew (coxswain Alec Esmond, co-captain stroke Alex Wada, 7 Will Marvin, 6 Matthew Jacobson, 5 Jack Mozingo, 4 Scott Gibbons, 3 Austin Sammons, 2 David Sorbaro, co-captain bow Tate Huffman) finished in 3:57.48, more than five seconds ahead of the Prep boat.
 
Brunswick’s undefeated Second Varsity crew, led by seniors Conor Boyle (coxswain), Alex Tucker (7 seat), Andrew Kelly (5 seat), and Michael Farello (2 seat), led wire-to-wire, as the Bruins picked up a similar five-second victory, finishing the course in 4:03.15.
 
Coach John Martin's freshmen squad started the six-race event by earning a noteworthy 12 second victory in the 5th boat race. The Brunswick freshmen capped the day's racing with a win in the 6th boat race, edging the Fairfield Prep entry by less than a second.
 
The Brunswick Fourth Varsity boat fell behind early in its rain-soaked race, taking second place to Fairfield Prep.
 
The race day ended with the inaugural presentation of the Kulaga Cup, named in memory of Fairfield Prep rower Joey Kulaga, who passed away in December of 2015. The Bruins were awarded the Kulaga Cup for winning the majority of the 1V, 2V, and 3V races.
 
Brunswick heads back to Lake Quinsigamond, near Worcester, Mass., on  May 7. The Sunday event pits the Bruins against a trio of Massachusetts schools, including Boston College High School.
