Lacrosse Knocks Off Deerfield in Home Opener

Sixteenth-ranked Brunswick topped second-ranked Deerfield by an 11-6 margin at Cosby Field on Saturday. in an early NEW1 Conference showdown, Jimmy Heidt led the Bruins with five goals, including the first two goals of the game for Brunswick (1-1, 1-0).

 

The Bruins, never trailing in the contest, jumped out to a 2-0 lead with the opening Heidt tallies in the first quarter. Heidt’s opening goal at 8:21 was set-up by captain Alex Buckanavage.

 

Later in the frame, Brunswick took a 3-1 lead, capping the first quarter on a man-up goal by Xander Dickson with 33 seconds on the clock.

 

Heidt scored the opening goal in the second quarter at 10:58, before Deerfield (0-1, 0-1) countered with a tally, making it a 4-2 contest.

 

Five seconds after a goal by Brunswick’s Cooper Moore at 1:14, tri-captain John Fox capped the first half scoring with a goal after grabbing a groundball on the ensuing face-off. On the tally, Fox raced directly in from midfield unmarked by a Deerfield defender, scoring on a well-placed low shot just inside the far pipe, giving the Bruins a 6-2 lead at intermission.

 

Brunswick’s Jack Ocken opened the third quarter with a goal at 11:30, as Heidt added his fourth goal of the game less than a minute later, off an assist by Max Metalios. The teams closed out the quarter exchanging goals, including Dickson’s second of the game, giving Brunswick a 9-3 lead.

 

In the fourth quarter, fellow Brunswick captain Sean Morris made it a 10-3 contest with a goal off a feed from Dickson at 11:16.

 

Deerfield followed the Morris goal with a marker a minute later. Heidt countered with his fifth goal at 7:17 on Dickson’s third helper, as the Bruins took a commanding 11-4 lead.

 

Deerfield closed out the game with the final two goals, including a 5-on-3 tally in the waning minutes.

 

Patrick Burkinshaw finished with a dozen saves for the Bruins, as Ben Shapiro won 8-20 face-offs. Metalios led the Bruins with three groundball pick-ups.
