Teed Up: Golf Preview

Head golf coach Anthony Fischetti is optimistic for another excellent season on the fairways. Entering his 11th year leading the varsity golf program, Fischetti, with a career record of 254-31-5, believes 2017 has the potential be a memorable year for Brunswick golf.

Last season, with veteran assistant coach Jim Stephens at Fischetti’s side, the team finished with an impressive 28-4-3 record. The seniors, including Eric Ganshaw, John Hughes, and Jamie MacFarlane, laid the groundwork for what Fischetti believes will be similar, if not better, results for 2017.

Asked what was needed to be successful, Fischetti responded, “To perform up to capabilities. This is arguably one of the strongest teams we’ve fielded in years.”

Along with assistant coach Mike Kennedy working with the varsity in 2017, Fischetti and Stephens expect a number of returning Bruins to make an impact, including senior Reid Robbins and junior Matt Camel, the co-captains for this season.

In addition, senior Charlie Knight and junior Thomas VanBelle, both team award winners during the fall season, look to lead the Bruins on the greens and in the clubhouse. Experienced junior Lance Johnson, along with sophomores Connor Belcastro, Matty Dzialga, and Charlie Marvin, add to the depth and talent of this year’s Brunswick team.

Newcomers, including sophomore Aaron Aboodi and freshman Ben Carpenter, are expected to contribute as well. Carpenter, who brings a wealth of national tournament experience, made an impact with the veteran players during the fall season.

According to Fischetti, beyond the dozen regular-season dates during the spring, Brunswick is looking to repeat as Hotchkiss Invitational champions in mid-April, while regaining the Brunswick Invitational crown on April 27 at Round Hill Club. The Bruins are also poised to improve on their fourth-place finish a year ago at the Western New England Prep Invitational, the final event of the season on May 10.

The Bruins begin their 2017 season against Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday, April 5, traveling to the Wintonbury Hill Golf Course in Bloomfield, Conn.
