Hockey Advances to Large School Semis

Brunswick jumped ahead of Milton Academy (Mass.) with an early goal and piled on five straight goals en route to a 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the NEPSIHA Large School Tournament, hosted by Choate on Wednesday. With the win, the Bruins (17-9-5) advance to the semifinals and will host Avon Old Farms on Saturday at Hartong Rink.

The victory was the first-ever win for the Bruins in five tries at the Division I level, dating back to 2009.

Brunswick’s Edward Glassmeyer (3rd goal) opened the scoring at 1:48 of the first period. The forward intercepted a Milton pass near the Mustangs’ blue line and skated in alone on the Milton goalie. Glassmeyer drifted to his left and lifted a wrister, glove-side, for a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first period, Brunswick’s Jack Forrest beat a Milton defender at the right circle to score his 10th goal of the season with a nifty backhander.

Leading 2-0 to start the second period, the Bruins scored a pair of 4-on-4 tallies 18 seconds apart to build a commanding 4-0 lead. Brendan Gregoire netted the first goal at 6:18 off a fine cross-crease feed from Glassmeyer. Nick VanBelle notched his team-leading 23rd goal soon after on a pass from Christian LeSueur.

VanBelle netted his 24th goal nearly three minutes later, finishing off a crease-feed by LeSueur (21st assist) at 9:16 to give the Bruins a 5-0 lead.

In the third period, Glassmeyer (sixth assist) found Tom Richter in the slot for the final Brunswick goal at 2:03. The goal was Richter’s second of the season.

Trailing 6-0, Milton kept up the offensive pressure and finally solved Brunswick goalie Strauss Mann at 16:18 to cap the scoring.

Mann finished with 29 saves on the afternoon for the Bruins.

Looking ahead, Brunswick will host Avon Old Farms in semifinal action on Saturday, March 4. The time of the game at Hartong Rink has yet to be determined.

Last season, Brunswick and the Winged Beavers met in the quarterfinal round of the Elite-8 playoffs, with Avon Old Farms skating off with a 9-2 win on its home ice.
