Historic Results for Swimmers at Eastern Championships

Brunswick swimmers set 10 school records, while several Bruins earned All-American status at the 117th Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships held at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. The Bruins, with 344 points, finished seventh out of 32 schools at the two-day event that concluded on Saturday. Peddie won the title with 554 points.

The "Easterns" is the largest prep school aquatic event in the country. Typcially, more national and prep school swimming records are set during this competition than any other meet in the nation.

Eight of the ten Bruins qualified for the finals, as virtually every racer achieved career-best times, giving the Bruins confidence to score well at the upcoming New England Championships.

The 10 swimmers representing Brunswick were Will Powers, Christian Farricker, Keegan Drew, Jack Sparks, Cole Pierce, James Simone, Alex Morgan, Marcus Hodgson, Thomas Foley, and Nico Apostolides.

Highlighting the remarkable performance by the Bruins in their first trip to Easterns were some memorable All-American finishes by the Bruins.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the Bruins set an All-American time, and new Brunswick mark, of 3:06.34 in the finals, earning a fifth-place finish. The finals quartet of Hodgson, Pierce, Farricker, and Drew highlight Brunswick’s first-ever All-American relay team. Simone and Powers raced in the preliminary round for the Bruins.

Hodgson also collected a pair of All-American qualifying times in the 100 freestyle. In an individual race, the freshman swimmer raced to a time of 45.73, while in a separate relay race, Hodgson sped to a time of 45.69. Those times shaved nearly two seconds off Hodgson’s previous best swims. The pair of finishes are both USA Swimming short-course and Junior National qualifying times. Hodgson also set a school record in the 100 butterfly (50.92), finishing in seventh place in the finals.

The last All-American swimmer for Brunswick was Eric Ronda in the 100 breast stroke in 2013.

Continuing with school records, Pierce finished seventh in the 100 backstroke, with a new Brunswick mark of 52.04.

In the 200 IM, Farricker’s seventh-place finish set a new team record (1:53.48), while Pierce took ninth (1:53.78).

In the 200 freestyle, Drew led the Bruins with a 12th-place finish with a school-record time of 1:43.08.

Brunswick took seventh place in the 200 medley relay. Pierce, Sparks, Hodgson, and Drew raced to a time of 1:36.75, setting another team record and knocking nearly two seconds off the previous mark.

The quartet of Farricker, Simone, Morgan, and Powers set a new team mark of 1:30.03 in the 200 freestyle relay in the prelims, as the foursome finished 11th in the finals.

The remarkable results at the 45-team event may prove to be a confidence builder for the Bruins, as the team heads to the NESPAC Championships at Hotchkiss on Saturday, March 4.
