Basketball Tops Hopkins

Brunswick beat Hopkins on Wednesday inside Dann Gym, 51-38. The win caps a two-game season sweep of the Bruins' FAA rivals, as Brunswick topped the Hilltoppers in January. With the win, the Bruins move to 6-10 overall and 5-6 in FAA action.

Hopkins (2-15, 1-11) took an early 4-0 lead before the Bruins countered with an 11-0 run, capped by a free throw by Kevonne Wilder at 9:15 of the first half.

The Bruins maintained their advantage during the remainder of the half, as Muna Nwana banked in a three-pointer for a 20-13 lead with 1:56 left in the opening frame. The teams each netted six points in the remainder of the half, as Brunswick took a 26-19 lead into intermission.

In the second half, the Bruins earned a double-figure lead at 29-19, following a baseline three-pointer from Cam Kelly at 13:45. Kelly’s trey was one of his team best four three-pointers on the day, as the co-captain went 4-4 from downtown on the way to a game-high 21 points.

Brunswick expanded its lead to 38-21 following a free throw from Cedric Lafleur with 8:06 left on the clock.

The Bruins’ lead stayed at double-figures down the stretch, as the hosts cruised to the 51-38 final.

Kelly led all scorers with 21 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, as Nwana finished with eight points and a team-best seven rebounds. Jack Malloy finished with nine points and five caroms for the Bruins.

For the game, the Hilltoppers shot 2-22 from behind the arc, while the Bruins were 7-17 from long distance.

Up next for Brunswick is an FAA contest at Hamden Hall on Friday, February 10.
