Middle School Wins Fifth Squash National Championship

The Brunswick ‘A’ team won the 2017 U.S. Middle School Team Division I Championship, held at Yale University on Sunday. The five Bruins, Williams “Mac” Aube, Coulter Mackesy, David Beeson, Patrick Keller, and Andy Aube, didn’t drop a single match over the three-day tournament. This is the fifth national title for Brunswick, as the Bruins won four straight middle school titles from 2009-2012.

Brunswick sent a total of three teams to the championship. Besides the ‘A’ team, the Bruins ‘B’ team competed in the top division, finishing in fourth place.  The ‘C’ team for Brunswick took third place in the Division II tournament.

Despite not competing in the 2016 championship, the ‘A’ team, coached by Steven Polikoff, opened the tournament as the top seed. After the Bruins quickly moved through the opening and quarterfinal rounds with 5-0 victories, they faced Haverford, the 2016 champion, in the semifinals.

In the semis, the Brunswick quintet dispatched Haverford, 5-0, to move into the title match against second-seed Episcopal.

Heading into the title match, the Bruins had yet to drop a single game (15-0), while Episcopal went 14-1 in individual contests in the opening three rounds. Episcopal’s lone individual blemish came from the Brunswick ‘B’ team in the semifinals, as the Bruins’ Warren Klein won his match at number four in four games.

In the championship, the Bruins swept all five matches, winning four without dropping a game. Aube, the number one player for Brunswick, worked for five sets to win his match.

Brunswick almost had an all-Bruin championship, as the Brunswick ‘B’ team reached the semis, before falling to Episcopal. The ‘B’ team (Tad Carney, Walter Huffman, Caleb Boateng, Klein, and Ali Hindy) finished fourth after a setback to Haverford in the third-place match.

In the Division II tournament, the Brunswick ‘C’ team reached the semifinals, before bowing out to Belmont Hill, 3-2. The team responded with a win in the bronze medal match, besting Calvert Hall ‘B’ by a 3-2 margin.
