Hockey Beats Seventh-Ranked Loomis Chaffee

Brunswick bested Loomis Chaffee, 4-1, on Friday night in front of an animated student section inside Hartong Rink. The win gives the Bruins an overall mark of 10-5-3, while improving their record to 6-0-1 at Hartong Rink this season. Brunswick is now 26-2-2 at home, dating back to November 2014.

The Bruins offense found a way to score against a stingy Pelican defense that allowed 1.36 goals per game, and has the top netminder in New England Prep Hockey. The hosts pumped in three goals against the region’s top stopper, Adin Farhat. The Pelican goalie entered the game with a tantalizing .946 save percentage, allowing just 12 goals in 473 minutes of play.

Brunswick’s Nick VanBelle solved Farhat through the five-hole in the opening minutes of action. The co-captain potted the first Bruin goal 89 seconds after the opening face-off. Keying the doorstep tally was a deft pass through traffic from Charlie Shaffer to VanBelle’s backhand.

Following a scoreless second period, the Bruins opened up a 3-0 lead on the Pelicans (9-5-1) with a pair of third period markers. VanBelle opened the scoring 40 seconds into the frame, netting his career-high 17th goal. Jack Forrest made it a 3-0 contest, scoring his third career goal less than three minutes later.

Farhat’s goalie counterpart for the Bruins, Strauss Mann, kept Loomis Chaffee quiet for nearly the entire game, allowing only a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 6:23. Mann finished with 33 saves on the evening.

Trailing 3-1, the Pelicans pulled Farhat for an extra skater in the final minutes. Brunswick co-captain Christian LeSueur foiled any Loomis Chaffee comeback and scored his 14th goal of the year on an empty net for a 4-1 lead.

In less than 24 hours, the Bruins pack the bus for a trip to Williston Northampton, facing the Wildcats at 2:30 p.m.
