‘Golden Ticket’ for Middle School Robotics Team

A Brunswick robotics team is headed to the state championships after earning high marks at a weekend qualifying competition.

The Sawdusters, as they are known, earned a “Golden Ticket” at the Elm City Robo Fest at Hill Regional Career High School in New Haven on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Sawdusters earned the second top robot score of the day, also earning high marks on sportsmanship, core values, and a separate project presentation around the theme of Animal Allies. All were needed for the team to move forward.

“It was a great day,” said coach Krista Wynia, who teaches Middle School science at Brunswick. “These boys have worked so hard.”

A rookie team at First Lego League (FLL), the Sawdusters include members Reed Gilbert, Andrew Keller, Colin Devine, London Ulysse, George Braun, Matthew Lejdstrom, and Ryan West.

Wynia herself earned kudos for her role in mentoring the team. She received the John A. Buffa Outstanding Mentor Award, which is given to a coach or mentor whose wisdom, guidance, and devotion are most clearly evident in the team's discussion with the judges and nomination by their team.

The Sawdusters were one of two teams from Brunswick to attend the New Haven competition. The second team, The Average Joes, includes members Lucas Korn, Felipe Leao, Andrew Lynch, Nicky Altman, Teddy Elmlinger, and Rob Jacobson.

Best of luck to The Sawdusters as they prepare for the FLL state competition in Shelton, Conn., on Dec. 3.
