Cum Laude Society Assembly: 'Cultivate Your Creativity'

Seniors Wills Danielsen, Andrew Floersheimer, Chris Peisch, and Pat Stefanou were inducted to the Cum Laude Society at an Upper School assembly at Baker Theater on Thursday, February 18.

Society Chairman Anne Allwood introduced the new inductees to the audience of students, faculty, and invited parents — also using her time at the podium to explain how Brunswick School implements the far-reaching goals of the Cum Laude Society.

We’re looking for students who not only have good grades, but also show a genuine love of learning,” Allwood said. “These students think independently and critically about what they’re taught; they ask questions that extend the discourse both in and outside the classroom; and they’re able to defend their point of view logically and substantively.”

Allwood also introduced this year’s keynote speaker, Assistant Headmaster and AP Psychology teacher Stephen Duennebier, who began teaching at Brunswick in the fall of 1979.

Duennebier encouraged the inductees — along with the larger student body — to develop analytical intelligence, practical intelligence, and creative intelligence in their quest to personify the ideals of the Cum Laude Society.

“Know that knowledge alone is cheap. Know that street-smarts alone can be empty. But that you need these two to fashion the third,” Duennebier said. “Learn the rules of the craft so you can twist them, view them from a fresh perspective, or even break them.

“Be a French impressionist in your field and know when it is practically appropriate to do so.

“But mostly, cultivate your creativity. It is only then that you will have fulfilled your charge to further the understanding of our world.”

Danielsen, Floersheimer, Peisch, and Stefanou join fellow classmates and Cum Laude Society members Alex Gibbons, Andrew Israel, Jamie MacFarlane, and Ridgley Knapp, who were inducted last spring.
