Crew Captures Medal at Head of the Charles Regatta

The Brunswick entry in the Men’s Youth Four race placed third out of 85 boats at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

Since competing at the event in 2004, Brunswick has finished in the top 10 among school/junior crews in the Men's Youth Eights six times since 2004, but this race was the first medal performance at the renowned regatta for Brunswick.

The crew of seniors Will Bass (stroke), Thomas Kern and Will Powers sitting two and three, along with Alexander Kutner at the bow, and junior Alec Esmond (coxswain) earned the highest-ever Brunswick finish at the event.

The Brunswick crew started out of the middle of the pack in Bow number 37 out of 85 schools and clubs in their event. The international event fetured boats from Canada and England, as the Bruins time of 17:25.037 was nearly 12 seconds off the pace of the winning boat from Cologne, Germany.

The other entry for Brunswick was in Men's Youth Doubles. This is a sculling event that Brunswick does not normally have the chance to race. This crew, stroke Matt Womble (junior) and bow Andreas Kern (senior), finished 45th of 51 boats.

Additionally, Chris Bass ('19) represented Brunswick in the Men's Youth Singles, also a sculling event, finishing 30th out of 35 entries. When Chris was in the Middle School, he held the status of the youngest person ever to row at the Head of the Charles Regatta when he rowed in the Directors' Challenge Parent/Child Double with his mother, Kristen Erickson (Greenwich Academy Faculty and Brunswick Parent, '16, '19). Chris and Kristen also rowed the Directors' Challenge Parent/Child Double this year. The event raised funds for the Head of the Charles charitable ventures.

Several Brunswick alums were racing with their various colleges, universities, and clubs, including the following:

Graham Miller '12 - Georgetown
Matt Podlesak '13 - Harvard
Freddie Polak '15 - Dartmouth
Hank Schless '10 - Union Boat Club
