The Brunswick squash team has nearly won the U.S. High School Team Squash Championship on six previous occasions — falling short, however, each time in the finals.
In 2015, the Bruins were back in the deciding match with a chance to raise the School’s first-ever national banner — stepping onto the court at Trinity College against perennial power and squash rival Belmont Hill.
And — after wins by senior John Fitzgerald, sophomore Tyler Carney, and junior Drew Monroe at No’s. 5, 6, and 7, respectively — junior and No. 1-player David Yacobucci knew it would all come down to his match against Belmont Hill’s Timmy Brownell, the No. 1-ranked player in U.S. Squash’s Under-19 Division.
Yacobucci — the top-ranked player in the Under-17 Division — clinched the title with a decisive victory (11–9, 11–9, 11–8), his Bruins’ teammates storming the court in celebration after the final point was won.
“I thought the Yacobucci match was one of the best athletic performances I’ve ever seen at Brunswick,” Head Coach Jim Stephens said.
Stephens, however, did not single out one player as the key to the national title.
“We received great performances in all of the matches,” the 30-year varsity mainstay said.
"Each player put his stamp on this championship run."
The ’Wick lineup — Yacobucci, Senen Ubina ’15, Jarett Odrich ’15, Yousef Hindy ’15, Fitzgerald ’15, Carney ’17, and Monroe ’16 — cruised through opening round matches against Lawrenceville, Episcopal Academy, and Chestnut Hill School to reach Sunday’s championship.
