First Issue of Multi-Lingual E-Magazine, Babel, Launches

Brunswick has a long commitment to diversity and innovation, and now a new magazine to reflect that.

For the first time ever, students from Brunswick School and Greenwich Academy have come together to create a multi-lingual e-magazine that features art, music, poetry, and prose in as many as 13 different languages.

A true collaboration, Babel made its debut this spring.

The innovative 124 page e-magazine includes original work from dozens of students in all the modern and classical languages taught at Brunswick, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Greek, Italian, Latin and Spanish.

It also includes material in Armenian, Bengali, German, Hebrew, Portuguese and Shona. All are native languages of members of the Brunswick community.

“Those students took pride to share their heritage languages,” said Mimi Melkonian, Brunswick Arabic teacher and founder of the project.

“This is student-driven work. This is another reflection of our diversity.”

Though reluctant to single out any one person or group for praise in this truly collaborative project, Melkonian credits state-of-the-art ’Wick technology as well as the music and art departments at both GA and Brunswick for lending expertise.

“We are a community, this is a group achievement in converging our energy in this interdisciplinary venue,” Melkonian said. “This reflects our philosophy of 21st century creativity in our daily teaching and learning.”
