Bruins Rally to Top Exeter

Brunswick stormed back with five unanswered goals — after staring down a 3-1 deficit halfway through the game — and rallied to defeat the hosts from Exeter, 6-3, in the nightcap on Rink A of the Exeter Invitational in New Hampshire on Saturday evening.

The Bruins finally settled into their brand of hockey in the second period, which they entered trailing 2-1, simplifying breakout passes up ice, playing a deep game, and going low to high off the cycle in the offensive zone. Still, though, the opportunistic Big Red increased its lead to two at the 10-minute mark of the frame (NHL-length games here at the Invitational).

’Wick kept pushing and got one on a savvy deflection by junior Drew DellaSalla after a nice keep-in at the point and hard low shot by senior Niko Cadoret — 3-2 game at the second intermission.

The visitors didn’t wait long to tie things in the final period, as senior co-captain James Shannon sniped one to the short side and over the blocker of the heralded Exeter netminder to even it at three. And the Bruins were then off to the races.

Shannon connected with DellaSalla after going forward on an offensive-zone draw to give the Bruins the lead with 14:09 remaining — and the Brown and White found the net again on two power plays (two for two on the night with pretty tallies from junior Sean Gibbons and another one from Shannon) to seal the team’s first win of the young season.

A good character-building road win.

New Hampton next at 12:30 tomorrow.
