Brunswick varsity baseball opened the regular season with a 4-3 victory over Iona Prep on Tuesday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top half of the fifth inning, the offense came alive for the Bruins in the bottom half of the inning.
The inning started with singles by Riley Redahan and James Moore, followed by two walks for Sam Sealy and Josh Feldman. Feldman’s walk gave the Bruins their first run of the game to make it 2-1.
The next batter, Cole Mascolo, hit a fly ball to center and Moore scored from third on an Iona Prep miscue to tie the game at two. Adonys Guzman broke the tie with a line drive over the center fielder's head to score Sealy and Mascolo, making it a 4-2 game.
Feldman led things off on the mound for the Bruins. The pitcher threw no-run, one-hit ball over three innings, striking out six. Nick Bianco came into the game to relieve Feldman and threw two innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two. Boston Flannery entered the game in the top of the sixth inning for the two-inning save. Flannery allowed one run on one hit while striking out four batters.
The Bruns played stellar defense behind their pitching staff.
Brunswick is back home on Thursday afternoon against New Canaan High School with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
