'Wick Secures Fourth in New England Wrestling Tourney

Brunswick wrestlers grappled with tough competitors from schools throughout New England to place 9 of 11 competitors on the podium as top 8 in the region and come away with a fourth place finish in the tournament on Saturday.

Five wrestlers placed top six and are eligible to compete in the National Prep Wrestling Tournament to be held in Upper Marlboro, Md., on February 25-26. Brunswick finished with 120 points behind winner Northfield Mount Hermon (260.5 points), runner-up Greens Farms Academy (253.5 points), and third place Belmont Hill (194.5 points).

Quinn McGraw (106) went 2-3 with a first round bye to take 6th place and earn a trip to the Preps. Patrick O’Donahue (113) also took a first round bye, then went 2-2, winning his final match to earn a 5th place finish. Enzo Vera (132) went 4-2 on the day with four pins to take 5th as well. At 138 lbs., senior captain Kyle Karas took a first round bye, then went 3-2, finishing his high school career with a win by pin to secure 7th place. Kyle Pagnani (145) followed a first round bye with 2 wins by pin, but dropped 4, securing the 8th spot on the podium. Senior Kaden Saad (152) was also the beneficiary of a first round bye, and went 2-3 on the day to close out his career as an 8th place finisher. Senior captain Will Donovan (170) went 5-2 with five pins, including a pin for his 100th career victory, to take 4th place. He will travel to the Preps to try to add to his 102 current career wins. At 182 lbs, Wylie Ocken had a tough day, going 0-2 in a particularly strong weight class. Tomas Delgado (195) earned his trip to the Preps with a 3-3 performance on top of a first round bye to take 6th place. All of Delgado’s wins were by pin. Senior Michael Neviera finished his high school career with an 8th place New England finish. He went 2-3 for the day. Finally, senior captain Cliff Belknap went 2-2 on the day but finished out of the money in a tough Heavyweight division.

McGraw, O’Donahue, Vera, Donovan, and Delgado will travel to Upper Marlboro, Md., to compete in the National Prep Tournament. Wrestlers who place in the top eight earn “All-American” honors.
