Big Crowds, Surprise Sunshine Mark Homecoming 2021

Homecoming 2021 unfurled onto Edwards Campus on Halloween weekend as big crowds of Brunswick families joined ’Wick alumni from across the country to cheer on the Bruins and reconnect with old friends — many, many people turned up throughout the weekend even under an ever-present forecast of heavy rain.

In sports, Bruins dominated play all weekend, winning decisive victories in football, water polo, and soccer — it was a clean sweep across the varsity level.

The sold-out, 21st annual Alumni Golf Outing went off without a drop of rain at GlenArbor Golf Club on Friday morning, the unofficial kick-off to Homecoming.

It was varsity soccer that actually opened the festivities — with a 1-0 win against Hopkins in front of a huge, Friday-night crowd on Cosby Field. A post-game show sent spirits soaring, with a bonfire and fireworks display that glittered against building grey clouds.

The Bruins were right back on the field despite rain on Saturday morning, defeating an undermanned Cheshire Academy 6-0 at Carroll Field.

The game was part of a jam-packed Saturday.

Early in the day, ’Wick’s youngest flocked to Bear Fair, the can’t-miss carnival of the fall, which was relocated at the last minute to Burke Field House. A miniature golf course, a giant inflatable obstacle course, and a slide were all added to the fun this year as the event spread out over the entire field house, with all doors open and ceiling fans operating for COVID-19 safety.

And by midday Saturday — a surprise!

The sun came out over Cosby Field during football’s pre-game warm ups, setting the stage for the team's convincing 34-14 victory over Cheshire Academy. The victory was even sweeter because eight seniors play on this year’s squad, and also because 2021 is the 20th reunion year for varsity football coach Mike Hanningan '01.

Brunswick water polo also enjoyed wins, sweeping a pair of games over the weekend, as it topped Greenwich High School 18-11 and Hopkins 19-4.

By Saturday afternoon, great packs of alumni were gathering along the sidelines of the football game for an Alumni Tent Party that featured wood-fired pizza, a beverage, and wonderful camaraderie. Like everything else about Homecoming 2021, the party was one for the ages.

By evening, the Alumni Tent was the scene of merriment for reunion classes ending in 1 and 6 — with many alumni gathered to reminisce and reconnect in the quieter moments after the game.

All in all, it was an exceptionally joyful Homecoming, the first gathering of its kind in two years.
