Soccer Earns Road 'W' at Salisbury

The varsity soccer team (6-3) traveled to Salisbury on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon and earned a decisive victory by a score of 5-1 on the host’s new turf field.  

The first half was well contested with Salisbury striking first in the 9th minute. A deflected shot struck the crossbar and bounced just behind the goal line. 

The Bruins responded strongly after the goal and put consistent pressure on Salisbury, scoring the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Frankie Grether put a ball through to Nico Montoni, whose shot was blocked but Malik Samms jammed in the rebound. Another Brunswick goal in the 40th minute was disallowed on an offside call and the half ended with the score tied at one.

A few subtle tactical changes were made at halftime and the Bruins came out firing on all cylinders, scoring four goals in the second half. Douglas Otton bent in a corner from the left side that Will Donovan converted two minutes into the half. 

Kaden Saad made a perfect long pass to Donovan, who took the ball to the endline and crossed for Montoni to convert (50th minute). Saad put another ball through for Montoni to strike home (59th minute). Finally, a long John Dunn kick that Montoni controlled and crossed in front of the goal was fired home by freshman Ollie Leonard (77th minute). The bench erupted when Leonard found the back of the net.  

Defensively, the back four was outstanding with Otton and Kevin Miller having particularly good defensive games. Grether and Will Higgs played very well in midfield. In fact, everybody on the team earned significant minutes and made a solid contribution. James Walker had a relatively easy game in goal but did make a few plays to snuff out Salisbury attacks.

Brunswick heads back on the road on Friday to face South Kent, a traditional New England powerhouse.
