Varsity Soccer Defeats Deerfield

Brunswick is back to the five-hundred mark following a 4-2 win at Deerfield on Saturday afternoon.
 

Set pieces were definitely a theme for this one, with four of the six goals coming off dead-ball serves.

Fifteen minutes into the match, the Bruins were up 2-0; in the 8th minute, Nico Montoni used his head to finish a corner kick from Kaden Saad. Then in the 13th minute, Malik Samms stole a ball near midfield and proceeded to beat five Deerfield players en route to finishing a 1-v-1 against the Big Green goalkeeper.

Deerfield put itself back in the game in the 25th minute, as a free kick from 20 yards out produced a shot on Brunswick GK James Walker, who deflected it across the goal line but was ultimately finished by an opposing striker.

Just five minutes into the second frame, Frankie Grether found the back of the net with a swift deposit of Doug Otton’s corner kick just outside the six-yard box. In similar fashion in the 80th minute, Will Donovan knocked in a set piece from Johnny Saunders from the opposite corner of our attacking third.

The home team briefly put the visitors on their heels in the closing minutes, scoring a goal on a breakaway with four minutes left in the match.

James Walker earned his second win as a starting goalkeeper, making six saves on the day and handling numerous crosses in traffic to keep the score in the visitors' favor.

John Dunn and Omeed Pooya had solid matches for the Bruins in the center-back position, both sharing the duties of long throw-ins throughout the afternoon. Senior Jeffrey Ruiz came off the bench and played very impactful minutes allowing ’Wick to settle into a good rhythm in the midfield. Donovan earned "Man of the Match" honors for his hard work up front, putting DA's backfield under constant duress and scoring the first goal of his varsity career.

Brunswick is back in action at home Wednesday vs Avon Old Farms.
