Middle School Math Team Wins Competition

For the third consecutive year, the Brunswick Middle School Math Team garnered the championship at the Southwest Connecticut MathCounts competition at Fairfield University.

Held on Feb. 1, the regional competition drew 181 students from 24 area schools to Fairfield for an afternoon of contests that set the stage for the state competition in March.

Four Brunswick boys were in the top 12 overall, with seven moving on to the state competition.

This is the most boys Brunswick has ever sent on to states, where the team will defend its state title won last year.

“Truly historic news from Fairfield University,” said Kevin Landesman, Brunswick's Math Team coach.

“I am proud of our effort in preparing for this day, and am thrilled that we won in such convincing fashion. We are ready to defend our title in Hartford!”

At regionals, the entire 10-member team finished in the top 30th percentile overall, a tribute to the depth and talent of the team.

Individual accomplishments were also noteworthy.

Andrew Tu ’24 finished first overall in the written competition, and also finished first overall in the Countdown Round in front of the entire audience.

Ajay Bagaria ’24 also deserves special recognition for finishing fourth overall and fourth in the Countdown Round.

Aside from Tu and Bagaria, boys headed to states include Robert Ulmer ’24, Thomas Ewald ’24, Ben Wu ’24, Ryan Ahn ’25, and Justin Guo ’26.
