Basketball Holds Off Late Surge by Storm King

Brunswick built an 18-point, second-half lead over Storm King and held on to beat the Cougars, 65-61, on Friday night in Dann Gym. The non-league win over Storm King (9-2) boosts the Bruins’ overall record to 6-8. Brunswick return to action on Saturday, January 35, hosting Salisbury in a non-league contest.

 

The 65 points was a season-high for the Bruins, as Khari Wilson (23) and Logan Galletta (18) both netted season-best scoring marks in the win. James Sealy added 10 points and Colin Mulshine chipped in nine points for the hosts.

 

Brunswick jumped out to a 16-8 first-half lead on a baseline three-pointer by Logan Galetta with 9:54 left. Khari Wilson extended the advantage to 22-13 with a pair of buckets from downtown.

 

The Cougars countered with 12-2 run, as the visitors took the lead at 25-24, with just under three minutes in the opening half. Brunswick closed out the frame with an 8-5 burst, as the Bruins took a 33-29 lead into the break.

 

Brunswick opened the second half with a dominating 21-7 run, extending its advantage to 54-36 on a pair of Wilson free throws at 10:26.

 

The Cougars did not fold, as the visitors climbed back into the contest with a 19-8 run over the next 8:15 of action. A pair of Storm King free throws capped the comeback bid with 2:11 remaining, as the Bruins held a 62-55 advantage.

 

Trailing 63-55, Storm King sank a three-pointer to make it a two-possession contest (63-58) with 18.4 remaining in the game. With 12.9 left, the Cougars were forced to foul. Wilson sank both free throws for the Bruins to push the Brunswick lead to 65-58. Storm King nailed a final three-pointer ahead of the buzzer, as the Bruins held on for the 65-61 win.
