Middle Schoolers Celebrate Compassion & Brotherhood

Middle School students paused to honor and reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as the Diversity-in-Action Club (DIA) and student council led presentations and breakout groups to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and to facilitate further discussion about inclusion at Brunswick and beyond.

Gabriel Lopez ’24 began the assembly with remarks about inclusion and empathy — ultimately connecting Dr. King’s ideology to the present-day Brunswick community.

“With compassion, humanity will be able to truly begin to move forward,” Lopez said. “Compassion will breed compassion. One kind act will breed two, and two will become four — until one day we can all call each other brothers.

“That is what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., would have wanted, that was his dream — for every one of us in this room to call each other brothers.

“And, we at Brunswick, must be a community that carries on his dream.”

The program also included a video to celebrate the life of Dr. King, speech excerpts shared by students and faculty, and smaller advisory discussions and activities based on inclusion, identity, and intersectionality.
