Football Loses in Overtime

Brunswick fell to unbeaten Avon Old Farms in overtime, 35-28. The homecoming setback to the Winged Beavers (6-0, 6-0) was the first Erickson League loss for the Bruins (5-2, 3-1).
 
Brunswick led 28-14 with 10:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, however Avon Old Farms scored 14 unanswered points to force the extra session.
 
In overtime, Avon Old Farms scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 20-yard pass on fourth down and converted the extra-point kick for a 35-28 lead. Brunswick failed to match the scoring drive, as a fourth down pass was intercepted to end the contest.
 
The Winged Beavers opened the game with a first quarter scoring run from nine yards out, as the visitors took a 7-0 lead.
 
Brunswick answered in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns, one on offense and one on defense. Quarterback Nick Winegardner (17/29, 258 yards, 3 TD’s) connected with Bernard Zoungrana from 27 yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Defensively, Colin Mulshine picked off an Avon Old Farms pass on the visitors’ six-yard line and returned it for a go-ahead touchdown for the Bruins. Chris Chavez added the extra-point for Brunswick, giving the hosts a 14-7 lead with 4:20 remaining in the first half.
 
The Bruins had a chance to extend their lead late in the first half, as Kevonne Wilder intercepted an Avon Old Farms pass and returned it to the visitors’ 18. The Brunswick offense could not take advantage of the great field position and settled for a Chavez 37-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half. The kick fell just short, as the Bruins took a 14-7 lead into the intermission.
 
Late in the third quarter, Winegardner found Zoungrana (4 receptions, 125 yards, 2 TD’s) deep down the right sideline for a 52-yard scoring strike, as Brunswick built a 21-7 lead with 3:08 left in the frame.
 
Avon Old Farms countered quickly with a six-play, 60-yard touchdown drive, trimming the Brunswick lead to 21-14 with 1:00 remaining in the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Wilder (7 receptions, 94 yards) set-up the Bruins final score with a 47-yard reception, giving Brunswick a first down on the Winged Beavers’ 15-yard line. Two plays later, Rocco DiChiara hauled in a 10-yard touchdown from Winegardner for the 28-14 lead with 10:28 remaining in regulation.
