Water Polo Wins Second Straight Cardinal Cup

Brunswick topped Greenwich H.S. by an 10-7 margin in the finals of the 45th Cardinal Cup on Saturday. With the win, the Bruins are back-to-back champions of the historic local tournament, as Brunswick won the title in 2018, besting the host Cardinals in the finals, 11-7.

The Bruins (18-1) currently hold an eight-game winning streak over their cross-town rivals, including back-to-back wins over Greenwich High in the title round of the Beast of the East Tournament in Pennsylvania.

Brunswick reached the finals of this year’s 12-team event after winning its group with a 2-0 mark. The Bruins dispatched the Staples H.S. in the first game on Friday (17-2) and Loomis Chaffee (18-2) in the second contest later that night.

In the semifinals on Saturday afternoon, Brunswick handled Greenwich Aquatics (13-6), setting up the showdown with Cardinals in the finals on Saturday night.

Leading 3-2 after the first quarter of the championship, the Bruins extended their lead to 5-3 at the half. Gavin Molloy set-up three Kyle Yelensky tallies in the first frame, as Molloy netted a marker in the second quarter.

The Cardinals opened the third quarter with a three-goal run, as the hosts took a 6-5 lead with 4:35 left.

Brunswick countered with an impressive four-goal burst to close out the quarter, giving the visitors a 9-6 advantage. Yelensky tied the game with a goal at 3:37, while Molloy followed with a go-ahead goal at 2:27, as the Bruins took a 7-6 lead. Brunswick’s JP Ohl continued the scoring with a goal just over a minute later, as Gavin West closed out the run with a solo marker with less than a minute to play in the frame.

Holding a three-goal lead to start the fourth quarter, the Bruins added an insurance goal, as West notched another solo marker 3:43 to play. The Cardinals netted the last goal of championship game, as the Bruins took the title, 10-7.

Brunswick also entered a “B” team in the tournament, as the squad finished with a 1-2 record.

Yelensky (16 goals), Ohl (10 goals), Molloy (8 goals) along with goalie Hayden Collins were named to the all-tournament team.
