Football Earns Season-Opening Win

Brunswick defeated host Loomis Chaffee on Saturday night in a non-conference contest, 36-7. The game, played in rainy conditions, was the season opener for both schools.

 

The Bruins (1-0) offense accumulated 414 total yards, including 371 yards on the ground, while the Brunswick defense held the Pelicans (0-1) to just 29 total yards from scrimmage. The Bruins defense collected three turnovers, four sacks, and several tackles for a loss.

 

The Bruins got on the board at 3:53 in the first quarter with a three-play, eight-yard drive, capped by a short rushing touchdown by Jalen Madison. The Brunswick offense took over on the Pelicans 8-yard line following a fumble recovery by Henry Caponiti.

 

Brunswick made it a 13-0 contest at 10:05 on the second quarter, as the Bruins offense methodically marched 42 yards on 13 plays. Brunswick converted a pair of fourth-down plays to keep the drive alive. Madison added a second rushing touchdown, breaking free on the left side from nine yards out.

 

In the third quarter, the Bruins extended their lead to 20-0 with a four-play, 61-yard drive. Madison opened with 36 yards rushing on two plays, as Kevonne Wilder finished the drive with a 23-yard scamper down the left sideline.

 

The Brunswick defense forced another punt, giving the Bruins good field position on the Loomis 43. Brunswick scored another touchdown on a four-play drive, as Wilder broke free for a 34-yard scoring run to give the Bruins a 27-0 lead with 5:02 left in the third quarter.

 

Loomis got on the board with a 75-yard touchdown drive to set the score at 27-7 with 2:48 left in the third quarter.

 

Following a Brunswick punt, a Loomis drive was cut short on an acrobatic interception by Jason Agudelo on Brunswick’s 31-yard line with 11:04 left in the fourth quarter.

 

The Bruins moved the ball deep into Loomis territory, eating up 7:34 of the fourth quarter clock and capping the drive with a 23-yard field goal by Chris Chavez with 3:30 remaining.

 

Trailing 30-7, Loomis took a shot downfield with a long pass, but Liam Fairback intercepted the throw on the Brunswick 29.

 

After the interception, Fairback settled into the backfield and rushed for 14 yards on the next play from scrimmage. Fairback broke through the line on the next play from the Brunswick 43, but the ball popped loose near midfield. Teammate Rocco DiChiara grabbed it out of the air and rumbled down to the Loomis 2-yard line. Fairback punched in the final score of the day two plays later on a three-yard plunge.
