Arabic Students Target Environmental Issues

Upper Schoolers visited with students from Choate Rosemary Hall to work on a collaborative project focused on sustainability and waste management in the Middle East.

The group, comprised of Arabic students from both schools, began the day with a tour of the Kohler Environmental Center at Choate — whose mission is to create a scholarly community dedicated to promoting environment understanding, stewardship of the land, and social responsibility.

Students teamed up to examine sustainability and waste management efforts in the Brunswick and Choate communities — before exploring similar issues in the Middle East and presenting their findings in Arabic.

Brunswick’s collaborative efforts were led by faculty members Mimi Melkonian and Oliver Bierman-Lytle. Melkonian is also the author of a new book — Nightingales: True Stories of Escape, Hope, and Resilience — about the plight of Syrian refugees.
