Cornelius Johnson Signs NCAA National Letter of Intent

Cornelius Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend the University of Michigan on Wednesday morning inside a crowed Baker Theater. In return for full athletic-scholarship aid, the 2018 football co-captain committed to attend the storied Big-Ten Conference powerhouse next fall.

Johnson, the 2018-19 Gatorade Connecticut Football Player of the Year, made the decision inside Baker Theater. On stage with members of his family, Johnson made a brief statement in front of a large group of supporters as well as several media members before selecting Michigan. The event was webcast and drew over 3,200 unique viewers to the live broadcast.

The Greenwich resident helped the Bruins (8-2) win a share of the Erickson League title and led the squad to their first NEPSAC Class ‘A’ Championship Bowl since 2014. In four seasons at Brunswick, Johnson played in a total of three NEPSAC Bowls.

This past season Johnson helped steer the Bruins to a share of the Erickson League title, while earning All-New England accolades as a wide receiver. The three-time All-Erickson League selection was also the Erickson League’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Johnson finished the 2018 season with career-highs in receptions (50), receiving yards (826) and matched his season-best total in TD catches (12). Johnson finished the year with 1,080 all-purpose yards, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 32-yard rushing touchdown this season. Over his four-year varsity career, Johnson amassed 129 receptions, 33 touchdown catches and 2,167 receiving yards.

Johnson is the seventh Brunswick student to sign an NLI this academic year. The other six Bruins are: Dante Polvara and Will Sands (Georgetown University, soccer), Matt Camel (Northwestern University, golf), Christian Farricker (University of Michigan, swimming), Michael Gottlieb (Boston University, lacrosse) and Reed Mascolo (Seton Hall University, baseball).
