Football Players Earn Post-Season Awards

Six football players recently picked up post-season recognition from the Erickson League as well as the NEPSAC. The sextet of Bruins earned honors from the Erickson League, led by Cornelius Johnson, the Co-Offensive Player of the Year, while four players, including Johnson, picked up All-New England honors.

The six players helped the Bruins (8-2, 6-1) win a share of the Erickson League title, as the squad played in their first NEPSAC Class ‘A’ Championship Bowl since 2014. This was the third NEPSAC Bowl appearance in the last four seasons for Brunswick and 13th overall, dating back to 1989.

Fellow senior and co-captain Nick Villis (Armonk, N.Y.) joins Johnson (Greenwich, Conn.) and classmate David MacGillivray (Greenwich, Conn.) on the all-league team, as juniors Howard Powell and Jalen Madison, both from Stratford, Conn., along with Aengus Rosato (Greenwich, Conn,) round out the Erickson League selections.

Additionally, Johnson, Villis and Powell earned spots on the NEPSAC’s All-New England Class A First Team, while MacGillivray was an honorable mention All-New England pick.

Johnson, a three-time all-league selection as a receiver, is the Erickson League’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Johnson finished the season with career-highs in receptions (50), receiving yards (826) and matched his season-best total in TD catches (12). Johnson finished the year with 1,080 all-purpose yards, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 32-yard rushing touchdown this season. Over his four-year varsity career, Johnson amassed 129 receptions, 33 touchdown catches and 2,167 receiving yards.

It is the third-straight season a Brunswick player earned the Erickson League’s Offensive Player of the Year Award, as Nick Henkel ’18 earned the award in 2016 and 2017.

Villis, an all-league linebacker for the Bruins a year ago, led the team with 106 tackles, while adding 10 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a touchdown-saving interception this year.
