Brunswick battled back from a 32-26 halftime deficit against Taft and defeated the Rhinos, 64-56, in Dann Gym on Saturday. In the season-opening win, Khari Wilson led the Bruins (1-0) with 25 points.
Trailing 9-2 early in the first half, Brunswick went on a 17-2 run, building a 19-11 advantage with 9:00 left to play. Taft (0-2) countered with a 21-7 run to close out the half with a 32-26 lead.
In the second half, Brunswick tied the game at 36-36 after Wilson finished traditional three-point play at 12:10.
The game was closely played over the next several minutes, before Taft connected on back-to-back three-pointers, creating a 51-44 lead with 5:40 left in the game.
The Bruins battled back, as Tristan Joseph knocked down a three-pointer at 1:34, giving the hosts their first lead of the second half at 57-56.
Ryan Mulshine’s put-back at 1:08 bumped the Brunswick advantage to 59-56. Leading by three points, the Bruins’ defense didn’t allow a point down the stretch, as Brunswick knocked down five of six free throws to close out the 64-56 win.
