Brunswick’s defense held Trinity-Pawling’s potent offense to just six passing yards and 152 total yards in a 22-3 Erickson League road win on Saturday evening. The victory keeps the Bruins (7-1, 5-1) in a three-way tie atop of the league standings with one game remaining.
In windy conditions on Coratti Field, the Brunswick defense forced six turnovers, including three fumbles and an interception.
Following a first quarter defensive stop on fourth down in Brunswick territory, the Bruins offense marched 60 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with a 20-yard field goal by Chris Chavez with 11.2 seconds left in the opening frame.
Late in the second quarter, the Brunswick defense stopped the Pride on a fourth-down play on the Bruins’ 33-yard line. Following the turnover, Brunswick running back Michael Gottlieb excited the visitors’ sideline with a 56-yard scoring scamper on the second play from scrimmage. Despite the missed extra-point, the Bruins took a 9-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Pride opened the scoring in the third quarter with a short field goal following a Brunswick fumble on the Bruins’ 18 yard-line.
In the final seconds of the third quarter, Gottlieb notched his second touchdown run, galloping 54 yards to pay dirt, as the Bruins took a 15-3 lead.
Brunswick capped the game’s scoring at 4:55 in the fourth quarter on a 44-yard touchdown toss from quarterback Nicky Winegardner to wideout Cornelius Johnson. Adding the extra point, the Bruins built a 22-3 advantage.
Keyvonne Wilder ended any Trinity-Pawling comeback with an interception late in the game.
Gottlieb set a new personal best on the ground with 151 rushing yards and two scores on 21 carries. Winegardner finished with 123 yards in the air, completing 6/11 throws with a TD pass, while Johnson led the receivers with five catches for 110 yard and a TD catch.
With NEPSAC postseason bowl implications on the line, the Bruins wrap up the regular season against Williston-Northampton on Senior Day at Cosby Field on Saturday, November 10.
