Soccer Knocks Off 10th-Ranked Millbrook
Brunswick broke a 2-2 tie against Millbrook with a pair of goals in the second half, as the Bruins held on for a 4-3 win over the 10th-ranked Mustangs on Wednesday on Caputo Field. Brunswick (7-4-3), ranked 12th in the WNEPSSA, is 7-1-1 in the last nine games.
In a back-and-forth first half, the teams twice alternated scoring and headed into the intermission deadlocked at 2-2.
The Mustangs opened the game with a goal in the 30th minute, as the Bruins countered with a tally one minute later on a slicing attack by Ryan Chinai. Chinai bested the Millbrook keeper, bottom-left.
Millbrook responded in the 38th minute, as the visitors finished off a long through ball with a one-touch goal to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bruins answered before the end of the half, as Harry Barringer worked his way past the Millbrook defense and finished with a strong right-footed tally from 20-yards out.
After the intermission, Brunswick broke the 2-2 tie with a goal in the 65th minute. On the scoring play, Chinai buried a loose ball on a Berringer crossing pass that was mishandled by the Millbrook goalie.
Two minutes later, the Bruins made it a two-goal advantage when Barringer blasted a lefty boot from a similar 20-yard spot. On the insurance goal, Barringer’s shot bounced in front of the Millbrook keeper, hit the underside of the crossbar, and went in the net.
Millbrook knifed the deficit to 4-3 on a tally in the 73rd minute, but the Bruins denied the equalizer and held on for the one-goal victory.
Brunswick goalie Eric Meindl made six saves, as the Bruins were outshot 13-11 on the day. Helping out Meindl in front of the net were Henry Foster, Ben Powers, Jack Withstandley, Ben Israel, and Will Maynard, as the quintet held off a talented corps of Mustangs.
The Bruins return to action with a road game at eighth-ranked Worcester Academy on Saturday, November 3.
