Football Stays Unbeaten with Last-Minute Score

With just 39 seconds left in the game, Kevonne Wilder caught a fourth-down touchdown pass to give Brunswick a 30-29 lead against Salisbury. The Bruins (6-0, 4-0) saw a last-second, 41-yard field goal try by the Crimson Knights (3-2, 2-2) sail wide left as the home team celebrated the one-point win on Cosby Field on Saturday night.

Brunswick fell behind 14-0 by the 8:12 mark in the second quarter, before a leaping, 18-yard touchdown grab by Cornelius Johnson trimmed the deficit to 14-7 with 3:47 left in the first half.

The Bruins made it a 14-10 contest on the final play of the half, as Chris Chavez booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired. On the drive, the Bruins started on their own 26-yard line with only 33 seconds on the clock. Quarterback Nicky Winegardner opened the drive with a 37-yard toss to Charles Packard. A play later, Winegardner flipped a pass to Jalen Madison, who scampered down to the Salisbury 12, setting up the Chavez field goal.

In the third quarter, Winegardner and Johnson connected on a 57-yard pass, as the duo followed-up with an eight-yard scoring strike to give the Bruins their first lead, 17-14, with 7:24 remaining in the quarter.

Roughly three minutes later, Salisbury answered, scoring on a 45-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead, 21-17.

With 10:08 in the fourth quarter, the visitors’ lead grew to 23-17 following a Brunswick miscue that resulted in a safety.

The Bruins countered with a touchdown at 6:49 in the fourth quarter, as Brunswick marched 73 yards in just three plays to retake the lead, 24-23. Jalen Madison’s 30-yard run started the drive, as Johnson’s 39-yard touchdown reception from Winegardner finished it.

It was Salisbury’s turn to answer in the back-and-forth scoring battle in the fourth quarter, as the Crimson Knights drove 75 yards, on seven plays, for a go-ahead touchdown. Leading 29-25, the visitors missed their two-point conversion attempt.

Following a penalty on Salisbury on the ensuing kickoff, the Bruins took possession on the 50-yard line with 3:11 remaining. After a first-down run, a facemask penalty on Salisbury pushed the ball to the visitor’s 35-yard line.

Later in the drive, on a third-and-15 situation from the Salisbury 40-yard line, Winegardner connected with Madison for a key 22-yard reception. After a pair of short runs and a scramble by Winegardner, the Bruins faced a fourth-and-one from the Crimson Knights 11 yard-line with 46 seconds left in the game.

On the decisive scoring play, Winegardner moved to his left, settled his feet, and found Wilder between a pair of defenders in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Holding a 30-29 advantage, the Bruins failed to score on their two-point conversion.

Salisbury would not go away quietly, as the Crimson Knights worked their way into Brunswick territory, highlighted by a 36-yard reception that put the ball on the Brunswick 24 with one second left to play.

After the Bruins spent their final time-out to ice the Salisbury kicker, the visitors lined up for the potential game-winning kick, but the 41-yard field goal attempt was wide left as time expired.

Johnson finished the day with six catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns, while Madison rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries, while grabbing a pair of passes for 46 yards. Winegardner completed 11 of 17 passes for 231 yards with four TD tosses.

The unbeaten Bruins head to Avon Old Farms (4-1, 4-1) on Saturday, October 27, to face the Winged Beavers, last season’s Erickson League Champions.
