Brunswick topped Greenwich H.S. by an 11-7 margin in the finals of the 44th Cardinal Cup on Saturday. While it was the first Cardinal Cup title for the Bruins, Brunswick (17-2) topped their cross-town rivals in two other meetings this season. All three losses for the 16-3 Cardinals this season are from the Bruins.
Brunswick reached the finals of the 12-team event after winning its group with a 2-0 mark. The Bruins dispatched the “B” squad from Greenwich H.S. (19-2) and St. Benedict’s (8-1).
In the semifinals, Brunswick rumbled past the Thunder Water Polo Club (24-9), setting up the showdown with Greenwich H.S. in the finals on Saturday night.
Brunswick fell behind 3-0 to the Cardinals in the first quarter, but rallied to tie the game at 4-4 at the half. Trailing 5-4 in the third quarter, the Bruins responded with a three-goal run, taking a lead they would not relinquish. By the end of the third frame, the Bruins held an 8-6 lead over the Cardinals.
Brunswick outscored the hosts in the fourth quarter by a 3-1 margin to secure the title.
The Bruins return to action at home against Chelsea Piers and Greenwich Aquatics on Saturday, October 20.
