Football Runs Past Kent

Brunswick’s Jalen Madison ran for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns at Kent on Saturday, as the Bruins (4-0, 2-0) topped the Lions (0-4, 0-2) in Erickson League play by a 29-7 margin. Brunswick returns to action on Homecoming against Taft (4-0, 3-0) on Saturday, October 14.
 
The Bruins took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter following a fourth-down stop by the Brunswick defense. The offense went to work from the Kent 46, marching deep into Kent territory before Madison scampered in with a 15-yard touchdown run.
 
Capitalizing on a Kent turnover, the Bruins quickly made it 14-0 in the first quarter, as defensive end Aengus Rosato recovered a fumble on the Lions’ nine-yard line. On Brunswick’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Nicky Winegardner scrambled in from the nine for a touchdown.
 
In the second quarter, the Bruins added another rushing touchdown, as Cornelius Johnson took an end-around run 32 yards to pay dirt. The five-play, 51-yard drive by the Bruins was set-up by an interception by Liam Fairback, his sixth pick of the season.
 
Kent did muster a rushing touchdown in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 21-7. The Lions capped an eight play, 70-yard scoring drive with a run from three yards out.
 
Leading 21-7 late in the second quarter, the Bruins halted a Kent drive, as Brunswick’s Whit Knight picked off a pass on the Bruins’ 15-yard line with under a minute before intermission.
 
A Brunswick highlight during the scoreless third quarter, was an interception by Jose Riera. Riera’s pick was the 13th interception by the Bruins in just four games this season.
 
Trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter, Kent turned the ball over on downs on the Brunswick 41. The Bruins kept the ball on the ground on their next drive, as Madison grounded out 27 yards on four straight carries, before popping a 27-yard run for a touchdown. Despite the missed extra-point, Brunswick held a commanding 27-7 lead.
 
The Brunswick defense scored the final points of the game, as defensive lineman Howard Powell registered a safety, sacking the Kent quarterback in the end zone in the waning minutes of the contest.
 
For the day, the Bruins’ offense totaled 320 total yards. Winegardner posted a 10/23 day as a signal-caller with 90 passing yards, while Johnson added seven catches for 63 yards to lead the Brunswick receivers, as each player added a touchdown run. Madison finished with 182 yards rushing on 18 carries with two touchdowns.
 
The Brunswick defense held Kent to 195 yards of total offense (87 rushing, 108 passing). The Bruins collected three interceptions, a fumble, six tackles for loss including three sacks, a safety and two fourth-down stops.
