Leyton Borcherding Qualifies for Sailing Nationals

Following a strong second-place finish at a recent regional qualifier, Brunswick sailor Leyton Borcherding will compete at the 2018 National Singlehanded Sailing Championships, held in Macatawa, Mich., on Oct 27-28.

At the NESSA Single Handed Championship, held at the Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown, R.I., Borcherding, racing a Laser Radial, was second out of nine entries from the region in the 11-race event. Over the two-day championship that began on September 29, the Brunswick sophomore finished with 41 points, earning six top-three finishes and winning two of the 11 races.

The scoring format is based on finishing position. The better a boat finishes in each race, the lower the score for the competitor.

The event winner from Hotchkiss (20 points), along with Borcherding and the third-place racer, also from Hotchkiss (47 points), will represent the NESSA at the national championship, as the sailors will race for the Cressy Trophy.
