Water Polo Goes 4-1 at California Tourney

Brunswick finished 4-1 overall at the 2018 America’s Finest City Tournament over the past weekend in San Diego. Following a 1-1 start on Friday, the Bruins went 3-0 on Saturday to finish in 17th place, atop of the consolation bracket in the highly competitive 32-team event.

Nico Apostolides finished with 15 goals over the five games, as Keegan Drew netted 14 and Kyle Yelensky chipped in a dozen tallies. In goal, Christian Hartch made 30 saves, while Hayden Collins made 14 stops during the tournament.

On day two, Brunswick opened with a convincing 13-5 win over Westview. Following a pair of tallies by their California foes, the Bruins poured in the seven first half goals, as Keegan Drew led the way with three markers.

Nico Apostolides started the second half with three-straight goals to give the Bruins a commanding 10-2 lead. After both teams exchanged solo tallies, Westview finished the third quarter with a pair of goals to make it a 11-5 contest heading into the final frame.

Apostolides and Kyle Yelensky each netted single goals to open the fourth quarter, as Westview capped the scoring with the final goal of the game.

In the second game, Brunswick topped Carlsbad, 11-9. Brunswick took a quick 3-0 lead following goals from Yelensky, Drew and Gavin Molloy. Hartch made a pair of back-to-back blocks, halting any momentum for Carlsbad.

Drew scored his second goal of the game goal on a counterattack, as Apostolides scored on a penalty shot for a 5-0 lead after one quarter.

Carlsbad bounced back with three goals to open the second quarter, as Drew wrapped up the first half with a goal to make it 6-3 in favor of the Bruins.

Carlsbad trimmed the deficit to 6-4 to open the third quarter, but the Bruins netted the two tallies, including a man-up score by Apostolides. Trailing 8-4, Carlsbad bookended a goal by Jack Moore with two goals, setting the score at 9-6 for Brunswick heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bruins added a pair of goals before Carlsbad closed the gap in the final minutes for the 11-9 final.

Brunswick finished up the tournament with an impressive win over San Pascal, 18-5. Holding a 3-2 lead to start the second quarter, the Bruins blew the game open with eight unanswered goals in the second frame.

Owning an 11-2 lead in the third, Brunswick extended its lead with three more goals in the frame. In a 14-2 contest in the fourth, both teams found the net several times, as the Bruins won their final game in California, 18-5.
