Soccer Battles to Tie Against Deerfield

Brunswick countered 1-0 and 2-1 deficits versus Deerfield with tying goals, as the two teams battled to an eventual 2-2 draw on Saturday on Caputo Field. The Bruins (0-2-2) head to Avon Old Farms on Wednesday, September 26.

Following a near goal on a shot by the Bruins that hit the cross bar at the 13th minute, Deerfield got on the board with a penalty kick goal 20 minutes later.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the hosts notched the tying tally following a string of passes from the left sideline. James Widdowson started with a pass to Harry Barringer that ended on the foot of Will Maynard. Maynard pushed it past the diving Deerfield keeper to make it a 1-1 contest.

Just one minute later, Deerfield responded with a goal on another converted penalty kick, after earning a foul on a breakaway.

Trailing 2-1, Brunswick converted on its own penalty kick to tie the game at the 82nd minute of play. Barringer drew the PK while making a run at goal, as Arryan Chinai converted the attempt to tie the contest at two-all.

The two teams played a spirited final five minutes, as each team made quality runs to score the go-ahead goal. Deerfield had breakaway on a quick restart that was thwarted on a brilliant point-blank reaction save by Brunswick goalie Eric Meindl.

Shortly after, the Bruins made their best two attempts on a go-ahead goal. Chisom Okpara's header hit the crossbar following a corner kick, while Ben Israel had a shot on net from a long throw-in that was barely deflected by the Deerfield keeper.

Meindl, in his first start in the net this season, made six saves, as the Bruins outshot Deerfield 11-7.
