Tennis Crowned New England Champions

Top-seeded Brunswick beat Roxbury Latin, 4-2, in the finals of the 2018 NEITA Class B Championship on Sunday in Cambridge, Mass. The Bruins (16-0) knocked off three teams en route to their first title since 2015, also a 4-2 win over Roxbury Latin. This is the first championship for Brunswick’s third-year head coach Ryan Abraham.

In the finals, hosted by Buckingham Browne and Nichols, Brunswick won the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3, as the Bruins took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Ben Powis picked up the first singles win for Brunswick with a straight-set victory at #2 (6-0, 6-1). Leading 2-0, the Bruins added another point with a comeback win at #3. Brunswick’s Ryan Glanville dropped the first set (4-6) but battled back to win the second set (6-4) to force a third set, first-to-10 super tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, Glanville trailed 4-2, but rallied with impressive comeback to win 10-4, giving the Bruins their third point on the day.

Roxbury Latin would not go quietly, as the perennial NEITA Class B power battled back to win points at #4 and #1 to close the gap to 3-2.

Despite the comeback by the local team, John DeLucia clinched the title for Brunswick at #5 with a straight-set win (6-4, 6-3).

According to a jubilant Abraham, the title was a perfect ending to a perfect (16-0) season.

“The championship was the culmination of all the hard work we put in throughout the season,” said Abraham. “It was the right group of players and they all put forth their best efforts today physically and mentally. We’ve seen just how much the boys’ games have developed over the season. They truly earned the right to be named New England Champions today!”

Before reaching the finals, the Bruins travelled to Pomfret for a morning quarterfinal match on Saturday then drove to Middlesex (Concord, Mass.) for an evening semifinal showdown against the Zebras. After an overnight stay, Brunswick met Roxbury Latin, the second-seed, for a 10:00 a.m. title tilt on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Bruins didn’t lose a team point or drop a set during two convincing tournament wins. In the morning quarterfinals, Brunswick topped host Pomfret by a 4-0 score. The Bruins won the doubles point with wins at #1 and #2, then picked up dominating singles wins at #2, #3 and #4 to clinch the match.

The Bruins packed up their gear and drove roughly 70 miles to play Middlesex at Middlesex in Concord, Mass. In the 5:00 p.m. semifinal, Brunswick rolled passed the Zebras by a similar 4-0 score to earn a spot in the NEITA Class B Championship.
