Brunswick earned a program-best, second-place finish in the Boys Senior Eight at the 92nd Stotesbury Cup held on the Cooper River in New Jersey. The Bruins finished second to current two-time winner Montclair, as Brunswick topped 36 other entries in the storied race that dates back to 1927.
Swift water conditions on the traditional Schuylkill River course in Philadelphia prompted event organizers to move the 1,500-meter race to the nearby Cooper River in New Jersey. The 2018 race had 195 schools and 975 boats.
Following a second-place result in Friday’s time trial, the Bruins qualified as the top boat in their semifinal race on Saturday. Brunswick topped national power Gonzaga by over three seconds in the semifinal, as both teams qualified for the six-boat Grand Final.
In the Grand Final, Montclair (4:30.690)took an early lead and never looked back, winning by more than five seconds over the Bruins. Brunswick (4:36.400) held off strong charges from third-place Gonzaga (4:37.030) and fourth-place St. Joseph’s Prep (4:37.035).
