Brunswick took part in the 2018 FAA Tennis Championships at Hopkins on Monday. Ryan Glanville’s second-place finish in singles action highlighted the day for Brunswick, as the tandem of Hayden Hoover and John DeLucia bowed out in the semifinals of doubles play.
The seven FAA schools are allowed two competitors for both singles and doubles play in the single elimination, 14-contestant tournament. All rounds before the championship were played as a single eight-game pro set, while the championship was played as a traditional three-set match.
In singles, Glanville rolled to the finals from his #8 position, winning 8-1 in the opening round and then 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Glanville picked up an 8-4 win in the semis to reach the title round. In the finals, Glanville faced the #2 seed from Masters, who defeated Brunswick’s Ben Powis in the semifinals (8-6). Glanville won the first set 6-2, dropped a close second set in a tie-breaker (7-6) and lost the deciding set 10-8.
Powis, the third-seed, won the opening match (8-1) against the other entry from Masters and his quarterfinal match (8-3), before the semifinal setback to the eventual champion from Masters.
In doubles, the Hoover/DeLucia tandem entered as the #2 seed and earned a bye into the quarterfinals. The Brunswick duo knocked off the seventh-seed from Hopkins (8-3) but lost to the other entry from the host school, falling to the #3 seed from Hopkins by a similar 8-3 score.
Brunswick’s other doubles entry of Clark Davis and Will McKinnon, the fourth seed at the event, won their opening match, 8-1, before bowing out in the quarterfinals in a close contest against the #5 seed, 8-7.
The full tennis team returns to action to wrap-up the season at the New England Championships on Saturday, May 19 at a site yet to be determined.
