Crew’s Top Boat Remains Unbeaten

Brunswick's 1V boat picked up a convincing win against a cast of formidable opponents on Sunday, as the Bruins topped five other schools in a 1,500-meter race on Lake Quinsigamond, near Worcester, Mass. The unbeaten 1V Bruins will face another tough test at the Kent Invitational at Lake Waramaug, on Saturday, May 12.

The 1V entry took an initial lead at the start and continued to put distance between the other boats, winning the race in open water (4:24.9), besting the second-place boat from St. John’s Shrewsbury by 5.61 seconds. Boston College High was third, as Fairfield Prep, Shrewsbury High and Tabor Academy followed, in order.

In earlier races, Brunswick’s previously unbeaten 2V and 3V entries suffered setbacks for the first time in 2018, as the Bruins settled for second in both races to St. John’s. Brunswick’s Freshmen Eight also finished second to St. John’s 4V boat, but the young Bruins bested all other freshmen crews in the event.

Brunswick’s Second Freshmen/Novice Eight won its race in exciting fashion as the team “caught a crab” near the finish line. With the crew leading by open water near the end of the race, a Brunswick oar blade was caught in the water, also known as “catching a crab," in the final strokes of the race, slowing the boat down near the finish. The Bruins held on for a first-place finish (5:11.9), over four seconds ahead of the second-place boat from Shrewsbury.
