Sailing Earns Silver at State Championship

At the Connecticut State Sailing Championship, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Brunswick rallied to earn a second-place finish in the 18-team fleet racing event on Saturday, April 28. The Bruins finished with 87 points, as Choate sailed to victory with 72 points.

In the two-division contest, Will George skippered the A Division Z420 boat with crew Ryan Heinzerling. In the eight races, the duo finished in the top 10 in each race, grabbing two second-place and two third-place finishes for 35 team points, 14 points behind Choate’s A Division entry.

Leyton Borcherding helmed the B Division FJ boat with Matthew Hein. While the FJ was relatively unfamiliar to the Bruins, the tandem sailed to four top-five finishes. Two second-place finishes in race four and five helped the Bruins move into second place overall, behind race leader, Greenwich High. Over the eight races, just nine points separated the B Division Bruins (52) with the top boat from Fairfield Ludlowe (43).

After seven race rotations in the A and B Divisions, Brunswick was in third place overall with 74 points, trailing Greenwich High (63) and second-place Choate (67).

In the eighth and final rotation, the Wild Boars posted a second and a third-place finish to overtake the Cardinals for the title. The Bruins also out-sailed the Greenwich boats, earning a fifth-place and eight-place finish, as the Cardinals posted results outside the top ten in each race to finish third overall.

Looking ahead, Brunswick is scheduled to race in the Phebe King Memorial Regatta on May 12-13, in Annapolis, Md.
