Aaron Sabato’s three-run homer in the first inning was all the run support needed for Brunswick, as the Bruins defeated Rye CDS, 3-2, in soggy conditions on Friday. The home win gives Brunswick a 10-3 overall mark and a 7-1 record in FAA play.
In the first inning, the first two Brunswick batters reached base after each were hit by a pitch. Sabato followed with a homer on a 2-0 pitch that cleared the left field wall. The three-run blast was Sabato’s team-leading fifth of the season.
Trailing 3-0, the Wildcats closed the gap with a pair of runs in the third inning with a two-out rally, highlighted by a run-scoring double.
The two Rye CDS runs were the only runs allowed by Brunswick starter Joseph Henry (2-2). Henry went 6.0 innings for the win, striking out six and allowing one earned run. Reliever Jake Hyde pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his second save. Hyde’s ERA after 14.0 innings stands at 0.00.
Five Bruins collected singles, as Sabato’s three-run homer was Brunswick’s lone extra-base hit.
After 13 games, Sabato leads the Bruins in numerous offensive categories including: hits (22), singles (9), doubles (6), triples (2), HR (5), RBI (12), runs (20), average (.564) and slugging (1.205).
