In the season-opener for Brunswick, Choate scratched a run across in the top of the eighth inning to beat the home-standing Bruins by a 2-1 score on Saturday. For the game, the two teams combined for 21 strikeouts and only five hits.
Brunswick broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally started by a single to center by Trystan Sarcone. Aaron Sabato followed with a fly-ball to right that was misplayed, allowing Sarcone to score on the play, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
Sarcone, who was on the mound for the Bruins, held Choate scoreless through six innings of work and was one strike away from a season-opening win. However, with a no runners on base, two outs and facing an 0-2 count in the top of the seventh, the Wild Boars rallied to score the game-tying run with a trio of walks and a hit batter.
In a 1-1 game in the top of the eighth, Brunswick’s Joseph Henry relieved Sarcone. Following a strikeout by Henry, a Choate batter reached on an infield error, as Henry allowed the next batter to get on base with a walk. With one out and runners on first and second, another fielding error pushed the go-ahead run across the plate, as Choate took a 2-1 lead. Henry retired the next two batters to stop the damage.
The Bruins got the tying run on base to start the eighth, as James Sassi was hit by a pitch. Sassi ended up stranded at first following three straight put-outs to finish the game.
Sarcone pitched 7.0 innings for Brunswick, collecting 10 strikeouts while allowing one earned run in his senior debut on the mound. Henry (0-1) was credited with the loss, giving up one unearned run and striking out three batters in one inning of relief. Sarcone and Sabato each had a single for the Bruins’ two hits, as Sarcone also scored a run. Luke Fisher reached base three times for Brunswick, earning two walks and a HBP.
Brunswick returns to action on Tuesday, April 2, hosting St. Luke’s in the season-opening FAA contest.
