Swim Team Takes Bronze at New England Championships

Brunswick wrapped up its season with a third place at the 2018 NEPSAC Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships, held at Phillips Exeter over the weekend. The Bruins’ bronze-medal result was the best finish in the six year history of the program led by head coach Aaron Montgomery. Brunswick’s 312.5 points trailed only top-finishing team from Phillips Andover (372) and the second-place host school Phillips Exeter (335) at the 11-school event.

The quartet of Marcus Hodgson, Thacher Scannell, Keegan Drew and Christian Farricker won gold in the 200-free relay (1:25.19). The win was the first-ever relay victory at the NEPSAC Championships for the Bruins.

In the 400-free relay, Hodgson, Cole Pierce, Drew and Farricker touched second overall (3:05.79).

Farricker scored for the Bruins in two individual races, adding two second-place finishes. The junior took silver in the 500-free with an All-American and Junior National qualifying time of 4:27.49, and was second in the 200-free with an All-American Consideration (AAC) time of 1:40.04.

In the same 500-free and 200-free events, Brunswick added more team points, as Nico Apostolides was fifth in the 500-free and Drew also finished fifth in the 200-free.

Pierce took third in a pair if individual races, grabbing bronze in the 200-IM (1:52.36), and 100-back (51.67). In those events, Scannell was seventh for the Bruins and Max Meissner was 13th in the 200-IM, while Meissner added a 14th place finish in the 100-back and Alex Morgan took 16th.

The Bruins finished fifth in the 200-medley relay, as Pierce, Alex Hazlett, Scannell and Michael O’Malley set a new team-record time of 1:36.09.

Three more Bruins finished in the top 16 in the 50-free. Hodgson led the Bruins with a second-place finish (21.11), as Hazlett was 11th and O’Malley finished 14th.

Scannell was seventh in the 100-fly with a time of 51.61, while Jake Charney touched the wall in 14th place.
